Gemini Gems Converted to Skills: What Free Accounts Get

The Gems you built are about to change shape — and a few things won’t make the trip

What Google says moves over, what it says doesn’t, and what to do before November.

You know the feeling. You spent an evening building a Gem that finally writes the way you do — your tone, your rules, maybe a few reference files — and now you use it every week. Then a notice says Gems are going away. Not “improving.” Going away.

Here’s the good news first: Google is replacing Gems with a new feature called Skills, and unlike the early test version, Skills are open to free accounts. Here’s what the Google’s Gemini Apps Help page on the Gems-to-skills transition actually says — including the parts the headlines skipped.

The short version

Google is replacing Gemini Gems with Skills on personal accounts in November 2026, and free accounts get Skills too. Your Gems convert automatically. Deep Research, Canvas, Guided Learning, video and music don’t work with skills yet, and skills reportedly need Keep Activity turned on. You must be 18 or older.

Is Google really replacing Gemini Gems with Skills?

Yes. Google’s help page says Gems are being phased out on a schedule: personal Google accounts in November 2026, Workspace business, enterprise and nonprofit accounts in March 2027, and Workspace for Education in June 2027. One outlet reported an in-app notice naming November 17 for personal accounts; Google’s own page only says “November,” so treat the 17th as likely, not guaranteed.

A skill is a set of reusable instructions you call up by typing a slash in the normal chat box — no separate Gems menu. You can stack several skills in one chat. Google says you can create unlimited skills, but only 100 can be switched on at once.

What free accounts actually get

Skills aren’t locked behind Google AI Pro or Ultra. Google’s page says they’re available to people over 18 signed in to a personal Google account, and press coverage of the launch says free users are included. The rollout started September 29–30 and is phased, so you may not see the “create skills” option yet.

What stays paid: Gemini Spark, tasks and schedules still need a subscription. Skills are the saved-instructions piece only — think “my weekly report template,” not “an agent that runs while I sleep.”

💡 Quick test

Open Gemini and type a slash in the chat box. If a skills menu appears, you’re in. If not, you’re probably in the phased group — check back in a few days.

What happens when your Gems are converted to Skills

Google says it will “automatically transition your Gems to skills” when Gems go away — including custom, premade and shared Gems — and that you can also rebuild them as skills yourself ahead of time. Supported knowledge files come along. Free users aren’t singled out for losing anything here.

What converts when Gemini Gems become skills: instructions and files do; GitHub files, Deep Research and Canvas do not

The honest limitations

This is the part a launch announcement doesn’t dwell on. A skill is not a Gem with a new name.

1. Several Gem tools don’t come along

Google’s page lists Create video, Create music, Canvas, Deep Research and Guided Learning as things that don’t transition, and says skills don’t yet work with Canvas or Deep Research. GitHub files aren’t supported in skills either. If you built a Gem around Deep Research, test it before the switch.

2. Keep Activity may have to be on

Two outlets report that skills need Keep Activity enabled. With it on, Google says chats are stored in your account and reviewers may read some of them, for up to three years. With it off, chats aren’t used to train models unless you send feedback. That’s a real privacy trade — I couldn’t find the requirement stated on Google’s own help page, so confirm it in your settings before you decide.

3. The minimum age goes up

Gems were open from 13; skills require 18. If a teenager in your house uses a Gem for homework, nobody has said what happens to it.

4. Europe is unclear

One hands-on test in Germany found the create-skills button didn’t work and no slash menu appeared. Google’s page mentions no regional limits, but I couldn’t confirm free-account availability outside the US. Try it yourself rather than trusting either claim.

⚠️ The catch

Google says Drive files and sharing are “coming in the next few weeks” for skills. If your Gems rely on Drive context or shared links, those pieces may not be ready on day one. I haven’t tested skills on my own account, so everything here comes from Google’s page and press reports.

What to do before November

1. Back up your Gems. Copy each Gem’s instructions into a document and download its knowledge files. Google itself suggests this.

2. Sort them into three piles. Plain instructions (will convert), Gems using Deep Research or Canvas (need a plan B), Gems using GitHub files (need a rebuild).

3. Try one skill now. Recreate your most-used Gem as a skill and run your usual five prompts against both.

4. Decide on Keep Activity. If you won’t turn it on, you may lose access to skills — better to know now.

5. Check shared Gems. If you sent a Gem to clients or a team, tell them the link route may change.

Same housekeeping applies on the other side: if you also built Custom GPTs, our guide to the custom GPT retirement and what moves to plugins covers the ChatGPT version of this exact problem.

Who should actually care

Worth acting now if: you have Gems you use weekly — writing styles, templates, study helpers — and you want them to survive the switch.

Maybe not if: you only ever tried a Gem once or twice. The automatic conversion will handle it, and you can ignore this until November.

Check first if: your Gems depend on Deep Research, Canvas, GitHub files, or you won’t turn on Keep Activity.

Gemini Gems to Skills: quick answers

Are Gemini Skills free?

Yes, per Google’s page and launch coverage: skills are available to free personal accounts for people 18 and older. Spark, tasks and schedules still need a subscription.

Will my Gems be deleted?

Google says it will convert them to skills automatically. What doesn’t convert are certain tools — Deep Research, Canvas, Guided Learning, video, music — and GitHub files.

When do Gems stop working?

November 2026 for personal accounts (a Nov 17 date was reported), March 2027 for Workspace business accounts, June 2027 for Education.

Can I still use Gemini without Keep Activity?

Yes, Gemini chat works, but skills reportedly require Keep Activity. Check the setting in your own account.

The bottom line

Skills are free, your Gems should convert on their own, and for most people this is a non-event. The people who get burned are the ones using Deep Research or Canvas inside a Gem, or who won’t turn on Keep Activity.

Do this today: open your most-used Gem, copy its instructions into a document, and try rebuilding it as a skill. Ten minutes now beats a surprise in November.
