📋 Fact-Check Note
Everything in this post is verified against Anthropic’s official release blog, API documentation, and TechCrunch, VentureBeat, and 9to5Mac coverage published April 16–18, 2026. Where the numbers are estimates, I’ve said so.
Part 1: Claude Opus 4.7 — What’s Actually DifferentReleased April 16, 2026. Generally available across Claude.ai, API, Bedrock, Vertex AI, Microsoft Foundry, and GitHub Copilot.
Let’s be honest up front: Opus 4.7 is not a generational leap. It’s a meaningful, focused upgrade over Opus 4.6 — the kind that will matter a lot if you run agentic coding workflows or vision-heavy tasks, and matter less if you’re using Claude for writing, research, or general Q&A. Here’s what changed and how much it matters for each use case.
The biggest complaint about Opus 4.6 in long coding sessions was context drift — the model gradually losing track of the larger task as the conversation grew. Opus 4.7 is substantially better at this. Users are reporting the ability to hand off complex, multi-step coding work without needing to babysit the output or re-orient the model mid-task.
| Benchmark | Opus 4.6 | Opus 4.7 |
|---|---|---|
| SWE-bench Verified | 80.8% | 87.6% ↑ |
| CursorBench | 58% | 70% ↑ |
| GPQA Diamond | ~87% | 94.2% ↑ |
Real-world signal: One internal benchmark cited by Anthropic showed Opus 4.7 solving 4 coding tasks that neither Opus 4.6 nor Sonnet 4.6 could crack, out of 93 total — a 13% lift in resolution rate. Hex, a data tool company, reported “low-effort Opus 4.7 is roughly equivalent to medium-effort Opus 4.6.”
Opus 4.7 is the first Claude model with high-resolution image support. Maximum image resolution jumped from 1,568px / 1.15MP to 2,576px / 3.75MP — that’s a 3.25× increase in pixel budget. For most AI conversations, this doesn’t matter. For document analysis, UI understanding, scientific diagrams, or any image where detail is load-bearing, it’s a meaningful step change.
BEFORE (Opus 4.6)
1,568px max · 1.15MP · Readable text in clear photos, struggles with dense tables and small-font diagrams
AFTER (Opus 4.7)
2,576px max · 3.75MP · Fine-grained text in screenshots, complex charts, technical diagrams, patent documents
Solve Intelligence cited this as directly unlocking life-science patent workflows — reading chemical structures and interpreting technical diagrams at a level that wasn’t possible before.
Opus 4.7 follows instructions more literally and more precisely than 4.6. Anthropic’s own migration documentation states the model “will not silently generalize an instruction from one item to another, and will not infer requests you didn’t make.”
That’s a feature — but it has a real implication for people who were relying on Claude’s tendency to helpfully fill in what you probably meant:
⚡ If you write vague prompts, Opus 4.7 produces vague outputs.
BEFORE (Opus 4.6 behavior)
“Make it better” → Claude inferred your likely intent from context and delivered an improved version
AFTER (Opus 4.7 behavior)
“Make it better” → Claude does something technically better, but may not touch what you actually wanted changed
Fix: Be specific. “Tighten the opening paragraph, keep the current tone, cut to under 150 words” beats “make it better” every time now.
Two new features for API users that directly address agentic workflow problems:
xhigh Effort Level (New)
Sits between high and max. Anthropic designed it as the default for “most tasks” — more thorough than high, less token-hungry than max. For general use, this is the recommended setting.
Task Budgets (New — Beta)
A token budget you set for an entire agentic loop. The model sees a running countdown and paces itself accordingly — prioritizing work and finishing gracefully as the budget runs down, rather than cutting off mid-task. Enables agentic workflows you can cost-control predictably.
Also new: /ultrareview, a multi-agent code review command in Claude Code. One command kicks off a parallel review across multiple agents simultaneously.
Opus 4.7 keeps the same sticker price as 4.6: $5 per million input tokens, $25 per million output tokens. But there’s a catch that most headlines glossed over.
Opus 4.7 uses a new tokenizer. The same text that cost you X tokens in 4.6 can cost up to 1.35× as many tokens in 4.7. That’s up to a 35% increase in effective cost for the same workload — even though the per-token rate didn’t change.
What this means in practice:
The good news: prompt caching discounts (up to 90%) and batch API discounts (50%) still apply. For workloads with stable system prompts or reused context, the tokenizer change can be largely absorbed.
Part 2: Claude Design — Anthropic’s First Design ProductLaunched April 17, 2026. Research preview. Available to Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise subscribers.
Claude Design shipped 24 hours after Opus 4.7 under the new “Anthropic Labs” sub-brand. It’s a conversational design tool — you describe what you want, Claude builds a first version, and you refine it through a mix of chat, inline comments, direct edits, and custom sliders.
The obvious comparison is Figma, but Anthropic explicitly says that’s not the target. Claude Design is built for people who aren’t starting from a design tool — founders, PMs, and marketers who need to go from an idea to something visual fast, without touching Figma at all.
📐 What Claude Design Actually Produces
Interactive Prototypes
Shareable, user-testable — no code review or PR required
Pitch Decks & Slides
Rough outline → on-brand deck. Export as PPTX or send to Canva
Wireframes & Mockups
Feature flow sketches → handoff bundle for Claude Code
One-Pagers & Marketing Docs
PDF upload → branded marketing asset with your design system
The most compelling part of Claude Design isn’t the design tool itself — it’s the closed loop it creates with Claude Code:
📊 Verified Early Results
Brilliant (EdTech company)
Pages that required 20+ prompts in competing tools needed only 2 prompts in Claude Design. Static mockups were converted to interactive prototypes and handed to Claude Code — without any code review rounds.
Datadog (Monitoring platform)
A week-long cycle of briefs, mockups, and review rounds compressed into a single Claude Design conversation. Time savings came from eliminating handoff friction between brief, design, and review stages.
⚠️ What Claude Design Is NOT (Right Now)
| You are… | Opus 4.7 matters? | Claude Design matters? |
|---|---|---|
| Developer / AI engineer | Yes — agentic coding is meaningfully better | Maybe — prototype handoff to Claude Code is interesting |
| Founder / PM | Somewhat — better instruction following helps | Yes — idea → prototype without a designer is the use case |
| Designer | Somewhat — higher vision resolution for image-heavy work | Useful for exploration — not a Figma replacement |
| Writer / Researcher | Less — vibe is more literal now, prompts need to be tighter | Low — not designed for this use case |
| Document / vision analysis | Yes — 3.75MP resolution is a real step change | Not directly relevant |
