Anthropic Is Giving Away 6 Months of Claude Max 20x for Free — Here’s Who Qualifies
Yes, it’s real. Yes, it’s free. And no, it’s not for everyone — only the first 10,000 approved applicants get in.
Anthropic just launched something called the Claude for Open Source Program, and if you’re an open-source maintainer or contributor, you might want to stop scrolling and read this carefully.
The deal is simple: six months of Claude Max 20x, completely free. That’s the top-tier individual plan, normally $200 per month. Do the math — that’s $1,200 worth of access, on the house.
But here’s the catch that nobody is talking about loudly enough: it’s capped at 10,000 people. First come, first served.

The short version: Anthropic wants to thank the people who build the open-source tools that make modern software possible. So they’re giving 10,000 of them a free Claude Max 20x subscription for six months. Applications close June 30, 2026 — or whenever they hit the 10,000 cap, whichever comes first.
What You Actually Get
Claude Max 20x is the heavyweight plan. Without going into the boring marketing-page details, here’s what matters in practice:
- Roughly 20x the usage limits of the Pro plan
- Priority access to Claude’s most capable models, including Opus
- Full access to Claude Code for developers who code in the terminal
- Higher rate limits when you’re deep in a long session and don’t want to get cut off
If you’ve ever hit the Pro plan’s usage ceiling at hour three of debugging, you already know why Max exists. This program lets you run at that level for half a year without paying anything.
Who Qualifies — The Honest Breakdown
There are two tracks, and they’re stricter than the marketing copy makes it sound. Let me walk you through both.
Track 1: The Maintainer Track
You qualify if all four of these are true:
- You’re a primary maintainer or core team member of a public GitHub repository
- That repository has 5,000+ GitHub stars OR 1 million+ monthly NPM downloads
- You have merge access (write or admin permissions) to the repo
- You’ve been active in the last three months — commits, releases, PR reviews, or issue triage all count
This is the clean, well-defined path. If your repo has 7,000 stars and you merged a PR last week, you’re in good shape.
Track 2: The Ecosystem Impact Track
This is the discretionary track for people who don’t hit the metrics but maintain something the ecosystem quietly depends on. Think: a tiny library that 40,000 other packages depend on transitively. A foundational tool that nobody talks about but everyone uses.
If that’s you, you’ll need to write a short explanation (under 500 words) about why your project matters. Anthropic decides case by case based on downstream dependents, breadth of usage, and how critical the project actually is.
My honest read: this track exists because Anthropic knows the 5,000-star rule misses a lot of important infrastructure work. If you genuinely maintain critical plumbing, apply — but don’t waste their time if you don’t.
The Fine Print Everyone Should Know
Even if you hit one of the tracks above, you also need to be:
- A real human being (no companies or organizations)
- At least 18 years old
- Living somewhere Claude.ai is available, and not in a country under U.S. sanctions
- In possession of a GitHub account in good standing
- Not an Anthropic employee or family member of one
One subscription per person. No transferring, no reselling, no account sharing. If you already pay for Claude Pro or Max, your current billing pauses for the six months and resumes automatically at the end.
Why the 10,000 Cap Matters More Than You Think
Here’s the part most blog posts gloss over.
There are way more than 10,000 people on GitHub who qualify under the Maintainer Track alone. The npm ecosystem alone has thousands of packages pulling 1M+ monthly downloads. Add the long tail of repos with 5,000+ stars across Python, Rust, Go, Ruby, and every other language, and you’re looking at a candidate pool that almost certainly exceeds the cap.
Anthropic reviews applications on a rolling basis. That means the order in which you apply matters. The earlier you apply, the higher your odds — assuming you qualify in the first place.
Don’t wait. If you qualify, apply today. Not next week. The cap will likely be hit well before the June 30, 2026 deadline, and once it’s gone, it’s gone. Anthropic might raise the cap. They also might not.
How to Apply (It Takes 5 Minutes)
The application form is short. Here’s what you need to submit:
- Your GitHub username or profile URL
- An email address (this is where the activation link will be sent)
- If you’re applying under the Ecosystem Impact Track: a 500-word-or-less explanation of why your project matters
That’s it. No interview, no code review, no recommendation letters. Anthropic looks at your public GitHub history and makes a call.

What Happens If You’re Approved
If you get the green light, you’ll receive an email with a unique activation link. A few things to know:
- You have to activate the link before June 30, 2026, or it expires
- Your six-month free period starts the day you activate, not the day you’re approved
- Already paying for Pro or Max? Your existing billing pauses during the six months and picks up again afterward
- Already on the free plan? You’ll be upgraded to Max for six months, then drop back to free unless you choose to pay
- You’re still on the hook for overages if you blow past Max’s limits
My Honest Take
This is one of the best free offers I’ve seen from any major AI company. Not “free trial that auto-renews and bills you $200 the day you forget” free — actually free, with billing genuinely paused if you’re already a paying customer.
It’s also a smart move on Anthropic’s part. Open-source maintainers are exactly the kind of users who will push Claude Code to its limits, find the bugs, build the integrations, and tell other developers what works. Giving them Max for free is part gratitude, part marketing, part product feedback loop. Everyone wins.
If you qualify, there’s no reason not to apply. The downside is zero. The upside is $1,200 worth of access to one of the best AI coding assistants on the market.
Just don’t wait until next month. 10,000 spots is a lot, but it’s not unlimited — and rolling review means early applicants have the edge.
