PewDiePie Just Released a Free ChatGPT Alternative — And Gave Away the Code
The world’s most-subscribed YouTuber quietly spent a year building a private AI workspace. Then he open-sourced it. Here’s what it actually is — and whether it’s worth trying.
On May 31, 2026, Felix Kjellberg — better known as PewDiePie — posted a video called “MY trillion $Dollar Project is finally OUT!” and released something that caught the AI community off guard. Not a YouTube comeback. Not a gaming video. A free, fully open-source AI workspace called Odysseus.
Within 48 hours, the GitHub repo had 30,000+ stars. By June 4, it crossed 44,000. For context — that’s more attention in a week than most venture-funded AI startups see in a year.
The launch line: “The war on big tech has just begun.”

Wait — What Is Odysseus, Exactly?
First, let’s clear up the framing. Odysseus is not a new AI model. It won’t replace GPT-5 or Claude on reasoning benchmarks. What it is: a self-hosted AI workspace — basically a full ChatGPT-style interface that runs entirely on your own computer, using whatever AI models you choose to connect.
PewDiePie describes it himself as “the self-hosted version of the UI you get from ChatGPT and Claude — but with more jank and fun.”
💬 Chat
Connect any local model (Ollama, llama.cpp, vLLM) or cloud API (OpenAI, Claude, OpenRouter)
🤖 AI Agents
Autonomous agents that plan, use tools, browse the web, and run multi-step tasks
🔍 Deep Research
Built-in research flows with SearXNG (self-hosted search, no Google)
📧 Email + Calendar
AI-assisted email triage and scheduling — running on your machine, not in the cloud
🧠 Memory
Persistent memory with ChromaDB — it remembers context across conversations
📚 Model Cookbook
Scans your VRAM/RAM and recommends the best model from 270+ options — one-click install
The Real Story Behind It
This didn’t come out of nowhere. PewDiePie — currently semi-retired in Japan — spent the last year publicly documenting his journey into AI and privacy tech. He’s been de-Googling his life, building his first gaming PC, and learning to write code from scratch. The AI community initially watched with mild amusement.
Then in February 2026, he fine-tuned a Qwen 32B model that scored 39% on the Aider Polyglot coding benchmark — beating GPT-4o (23.1%) and Gemini 2.0 Pro Exp (35.6%). Not frontier-model territory, but enough to make people stop laughing.
Odysseus is the final piece. His stated reason for building the whole thing: he didn’t want his data going to big tech companies. That’s it. Simple, honest, and apparently shared by a lot of people — judging by the GitHub star count.
What PewDiePie said at launch
“No tracking, no subscriptions, no funny business. It’s yours and yours forever.”
How to Install Odysseus
There are two paths depending on your OS.
Docker (Windows / Linux — recommended)
git clone https://github.com/pewdiepie-archdaemon/odysseus.git
cd odysseus
docker compose up
Then open http://localhost:7000 in your browser.
Native (Apple Silicon Mac — for GPU acceleration)
Docker on macOS can’t access the Metal GPU, so run it natively for best performance:
git clone https://github.com/pewdiepie-archdaemon/odysseus.git
cd odysseus
./start-macos.sh
Launches at http://127.0.0.1:7860

The Honest Take: Should You Try It?
✅ Worth trying if…
- You’re tired of monthly AI subscriptions
- Privacy matters for your work or data
- You want one workspace for chat + agents + docs
- You’re comfortable with Docker or terminal
- You want to experiment with 270+ local models
⚠️ Be aware that…
- It’s only 1 week old — rough edges exist
- Self-hosting requires some tech patience
- Local models still need decent RAM/VRAM
- It won’t beat frontier models on hard tasks
The software is early. The team behind it is essentially one person with an enormous audience and a clear vision. But for the use case it’s targeting — a private, self-hosted alternative to paying cloud AI services — it’s already more complete than most funded projects manage in a first release.
The bigger deal is what it represents. When someone with 110 million subscribers ships an open-source privacy-first AI tool as a personal project, it changes who this conversation reaches. Local AI has been a developer-only conversation. Odysseus might be the thing that makes it mainstream.
TL;DR: The Quick Summary
- PewDiePie (110M+ subscribers) released Odysseus on May 31, 2026
- Free, open-source (MIT), self-hosted AI workspace
- Chat + agents + research + email + memory — all running on your machine
- Supports 270+ models, local or cloud API
- GitHub: github.com/pewdiepie-archdaemon/odysseus
- 44,000+ GitHub stars in one week
