The offer is real and it’s better than anything Google has run before. The terms are also more restrictive than every headline you’ve read about it. Here’s the whole picture — including the countries that get nothing.

You know the feeling when a deal looks too generous and you spend the next ten minutes hunting for the trap. That instinct is correct here — but the trap isn’t where you’d expect it. The offer itself is legitimate. Google announced it on August 19, 2026, it comes straight from the Gemini team, and there’s no promo code nonsense involved.
The problem is that almost every write-up stopped at “students get a free year” and never opened the footnotes. So let’s open them. Below is what you actually get, what Google requires from you, which countries are quietly excluded, and — if you’re not a student — the separate 4-month route that still works.
What Google is actually giving away
This is the first place the coverage goes wrong. “One free year of Google AI” is not one offer — it’s two, and which one you get depends entirely on where you live.
If you’re a student in the U.S.
You get Google AI Pro, the $19.99/month tier, free for twelve months. That’s roughly $240 of subscription. It includes 4x higher usage limits in Gemini compared to a free account, access to Gemini Spark, Gemini inside Gmail and Docs, 5 TB of storage, and Google Health Premium.
If you’re a student almost anywhere else
You get Google AI Plus — a genuinely smaller plan that normally costs $4.99/month. It gives you Gemini Omni, 2x higher usage limits, and 400 GB of storage. Still free for a year, still worth claiming. But if you read a headline saying students worldwide get AI Pro, that headline was wrong.

The catch nobody put in the headline
Three things sit in Google’s footnotes rather than its announcement. None of them make the offer bad. All of them will annoy you if you find out later.
⚡ It auto-charges after 12 months
A valid payment method is required at sign-up. Unless you cancel first, Google will start charging $19.99/month (or $4.99 for AI Plus) the moment the free year ends. Cancelling is allowed at any time — but nothing cancels itself.
⚠️ Some countries get neither offer
The AI Plus student offer covers 140+ markets but explicitly excludes Bolivia, Albania, Canada, Macau, Hong Kong and Tunisia. Since the AI Pro version is U.S.-only, students in those six places currently get nothing from this promotion. Canadian students in particular keep getting told this offer is for them. It isn’t.
There’s a deadline. You have to redeem by December 31, 2026. After that the offer is gone regardless of your enrollment status.
Age matters. You need to be 18 or older with a personal Google account.
School accounts are treated differently. The discounted Google AI Pro + YouTube Premium student bundle is explicitly not available on school-issued accounts, and requires SheerID verification. Use a personal Google account and save yourself the loop.
How to claim it, step by step
The whole thing takes about five minutes if you have your school email handy.
1. Sign in to your personal Google account. Not your school-issued one. Do this first so you don’t accidentally attach the offer to the wrong account.
2. Go to the student offer page. Open one.google.com/ai-student in a normal browser, not inside a mobile app.
3. Verify your student status. You’ll be asked to confirm enrollment with a valid school email address when prompted.
4. Add a payment method. Required. You won’t be charged during the 12 months.
5. Set a calendar reminder for month 11. Do it before you close the tab. This is the single step that decides whether this offer costs you $0 or $240.
💡 The safest move
You can cancel a Google One membership immediately after activating it and still keep access until the paid-through date. If you know you don’t want to continue past the free year, cancel on day one at one.google.com → Manage membership → Cancel. Verify the end date shown on your confirmation screen before you rely on this.

This is the offer this page originally covered, and it hasn’t gone away. If you’re not enrolled anywhere, a friend who already pays for Google AI Pro can send you an invite link worth four free months — about $80. No student email, no promo code.
If you’re receiving an invite
Ask someone who subscribes for their personal invite link — each subscriber has three slots. Open the link in Chrome or Safari rather than the Gemini mobile app, where the offer screen doesn’t render properly. You’ll need to be new to Google AI Pro, 18 or older, and on a personal Google account in a supported region.
If you’re sending one
Open gemini.google.com in a desktop or mobile browser and look for “Invite a friend” in the left sidebar. The menu doesn’t appear in the smartphone app. You get three slots total, and an unredeemed slot frees up again.

The honest limitations
A few things worth saying plainly, because they don’t show up in the marketing.
A card on file is a real commitment, not a formality. Every “free” offer here requires one. If you’ve historically forgotten to cancel trials, twelve months is a very long time to remember something. Build the reminder now or skip the offer.
Coverage of the reminder email is contradictory. Some reports say Google emails you before the trial converts; others say it doesn’t. We could not confirm this from Google’s own offer terms, so treat a reminder as something that might not arrive. Your calendar is the reliable part.
“Free for students worldwide” is doing a lot of work. Outside the U.S. you’re getting a $4.99 plan, not a $19.99 one. The gap in usage limits and storage is substantial, and six markets are excluded entirely.
The bundle renews longer than you think. Google’s terms for the discounted AI Pro + YouTube Premium student bundle say it can stay valid for up to four years and may automatically renew at the standard monthly price once your student status ends. If you take the bundle, that’s a multi-year relationship, not a one-year one.
Most of the study tools aren’t behind the paywall. The student hub, study notebooks and interactive visualizations are rolling out to all Gemini accounts. The subscription raises your limits and lets you build more notebooks with more sources — it doesn’t unlock the features themselves.
Who should actually care
Worth it if: you’re a U.S. college student, you already lean on Gemini for coursework, and you can be trusted with a calendar reminder. Twelve months of the $19.99 tier at no cost is the best consumer AI offer currently on the table.
Maybe not if: you’re outside the U.S. The AI Plus tier is a real upgrade over free, but it’s a modest one — claim it if it’s easy, don’t reorganize your workflow around it.
Skip if: you’re in Canada, Hong Kong, Macau, Albania, Bolivia or Tunisia — you’re not eligible for either version. Also skip if you have a track record of forgetting to cancel subscriptions, because this one bites twelve months from now, when you’ve completely forgotten it exists.
